Description
Strolling through Nishi-ward: Scenery of Momiji-zaka Slope
“Yesterday is long ago for today. Today is once-upon-a-time for tomorrow.” This is a phrase of a song from Kanginshu compiled in Muromachi period. Indeed, time flies so fast.
New Year’s Day is just a continuation of yesterday, so it’s nothing special. But Japanese people are different. As it is the beginning of the year, they make their New Year resolutions or start writing journal as a fresh start.
By the way, there used to be Kanagawa Magistrate's office near Youth Center on Momiji-zaka slope. It is said to be established in 1859 (Ansei 6), so it’s around 140 years ago. The time and scenery changed, but when I stand on top of this slope on New Year’s Day, I feel as if I could hear sound of the old days such officials standing on the slope and exchanging new year greetings in statuesquely and dressed up local young girls sharing laughter with beaming face.
