Strolling through Nishi-ward: Hyakudanzaka Slope in Kasumigaoka

The name Kasumigaoka was newly created July in 1935 (Showa 10) when town names and boundaries were subsequently altered due to land readjustment projects. On 15th avenue, if you go down little from the place where Iron hot spring was located in the past, you will find a very steep slope on your left.

The slope exists even before the war. It used to be a narrow animal trail, but now it’s well-maintained concrete slope. It is the fastest short-cut to go to Nogeyama park, which is 50 meters above sea level. It is also called “Hyakudanzaka (100 steps staircase)” by local people, but when I counted, there were 112 steps.

On top of the slope, there is a radio tower standing nearby which is owned by a taxi company. There is an observation platform of Nogeyama and on a sunny day, you can see a great landscape of the city and even Mt. Fuji and Mt. Tanzawa.
