Strolling through Nishi-ward: Memorial Monument of Transit of Venus Observation

Observation expeditions were sent to Yokohama, Kobe and Nagasaki from all over the world because Japan was the best observation point for Transit of Venus Observation which happened on December 9, 1874 (Meiji 7). Team of Mexico with the captain Francisco D?az Covarrubias visited Yokohama.

At the time, Japan was still in chaos after the Meiji Restoration. People from economic and business world were attacked and Tondenhei a system of military and farming introduced in Hokaido and “Kappore” became very popular in the city.

Among science, astronomy has a history starting even before the B.C. It is surprising that since that time, global scale research was conducted in astronomy. This monument was built in Show 49 to celebrate its 100th year anniversary of Transit of Venus Observation.
