Strolling through Nishi-ward: Zinchuzaka Slope and H・I・J secret

Suidomichi Road leading to Nogeyama becomes very steep at this point in Fujidana. This slope is called Zinchuzaka because there used to be Kanagawa Prefectural Daiichi Senior High School, also known as “Zinchu” before the war. Founded in 1897 (Meiji 30), it is one of the most prestigious schools in the prefecture. After the war, due to the reform of educational system, it was transferred to Kibogaoka and re-named as Kibogaoka Senior High School. Fujidana Prefectural housing complex was constructed at the ruins of the school, which is said to be a forerunner of multi-family residential in the prefecture.

By the way, Zinchu has produced many geniuses, they had a sense of being one of the elite. They said connecting H (Hiranuma High School, which was admired by many junior high student) and J (Zinchu) with I (ai or love in Japanese). This made students from other schools including me to stamp our feet in frustration.
