Strolling through Nishi-ward: Bluff Style (Flemish Bond) Stonewall
When you enter a path from Ganki-Yokocho street, you will get to postern of Kanmo mountain. If you climb up the mountain, you will get to Yokohama Noh Theater. This area was originally called “Fudosan”, but later it became a hub for railway construction in 1872 (Meiji 5) then it was called “Tetsudoyama (railway mountain)” since then.
Residence of foreign engineers who were involved in railway construction was built in this area. Those stonewall are remnant of those residence. It is western style stonewall which is similar to Flemish bond. This style of stonewall was often seen in residence of foreigners in Yamate area, so it was called “Bluff (Yamate) style”. The stone was mine in Boshu and those stonewall survived Great Kanto earthquake. However, it was renovated in Heisei 8. There is other big stonewall at Nogezaka crossing. The stonewall is ruin of mansion of wealthy merchant Senzo Hiranuma. The stonewall is called “turtleback style” as it was pilled up stone with a shape of turtle’s shell.
