Description
Strolling through Nishi-ward: Shagushi-sama and Shintenchi
There is a fruit and vegetable shop with 60 years history near Kofukuji temple, which is one of the oldest temples in Nishi-ward. The road in front of the shop is National Route 16 and if you turn left, you will get to Owariyabashi Bridge and if you turn right, you will get to Hodogaya, and if you go straight, you will get to Shagushi park surrounded by nature. The park was named after Shagushi-daigogen, which is believed to be a guardian deity of Kofukuji temple. Oshamoji-sama is also enshrined in Sugiyama shrine. It originally has miraculous efficacy against whooping cough and illness related to throat and many people visited to pray. When I asked about it at the temple, they said now it is more famous for a deity of eye diseases.
Also, there used to be “Shintenchi”, red-light districts where there were many brothels. During its peak, there used to be 20 to 30 brothels. However, it is a quiet residential district now without any remnant of the past.
