Description
Strolling through Nishi-ward: Area near Yokohama City Library in Noge
The library surrounded by modern objet d'art has experienced many transformations to this date. The framework of the library was first created in 1919 (Taisho 8), however due to financial difficulty, it was kept on hold for a while. When it finally got on track, Great Kanto earthquake happened. After that, the library was finally constructed on the ruins of old Oimatsu elementary school. However, immediately after that, it was requisitioned by Japanese army headquarters and was devastated during the Second World War. After the war, it was occupied by US army. It has a long history of hardship. The library finally became the present day building in Heisei 6.
It’s off the subject, but do you know why there are many stores selling Buddhist altar items and Shinto items in the area? I guess there used to be some big temples such as Daishoin, Rinkoji and Joseiji. As the area was developed, those temples were transferred to Kubo mountain, but those stores remained here as remnant of a town of temple.
