Description
Strolling through Nishi-ward: Hazawa Inari
“Inari” derives from “Inanari” and it is said to enshrine Ukanomitamanokami, which controls Gokoku (Five Grains).
Fushimi Inari in Kyoto, which is Shinto style and Toyokawa Inari of Soto Zen Enpukuzan Myogonji is Buddhism style. Honzon (principal image) of Hazawa Inari is Dakiniten. So, it is remnant of mixture of Buddhism and Shinto.
Worship of Inari spread countlessly all over Japan as it covers wide range of defense including food, safety of one’s family and prosperous trade.
By the way, Hazawa Inari had to be transferred several times. It was transferred to the current spot in 1917 (Taisho 6). Even though it’s small, there is Kagura Hall and divine messenger, foxes are reasonably adorable.
※Also known as syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism.
Writing and picture by Tai Hasewaga (Nishi ward Cultural Association/Chairman of Kiko Society)
