Description
Strolling through Nishi-ward: Ancient shrine of Hakuh? period
Sugiyama Shrine is located in Nishi-ward Central surrounded by ancient Japanese zelkova
ginkgo trees. It has very quiet atmosphere, so you cannot believe it’s in the middle of the city. inscription on a monument in the shrine says “It was built around 1,300 years ago in Hakuh? 3 by enshrining a divine spirit of Onamuchi no Mikoto from Izumo-taisha.” Onamuchi no Mikoto is also known as Okunishi no Mikoto, god of happiness and fortune. It is one of the most ancient shrines in Yokohama.
In the shrine, “Oshamojisama”, which has deep connection with Minamoto no Yoritomo is enshrined. It said that it has miraculous efficacy against whooping cough, so many people visited the shrine. It enshrines other gods including Inari-sha, Sanno-sha and Itsukushima-sha. It is hard to imagine it used to hold a festival where many 18 meters Nobori (Japanese banner) were hoisted back in those days. But in my distant memory, there was a show tent and kids went to the shrine excitedly for three days since the eve of the festival attracted by the sound of whistle and drum.
