Description
Strolling through Nishi-ward: Katabira River’s Koi (carp)
Some people say kanji of Katabira River (帷子川) used to be “片平川”. North side of the coast was flat, that’s why it’s named Katabira. But I guess a smart person used kanji of “帷子”.
According to old documents, mouth of Katabira River which flows into Sodegaura used to be very wide. The width of the river was twice or three-times wider than now and it was very busy as a distributing center for various kind of materials. The middle of the river is Hodogaya area and riverhead goes back to Kamikawai in Asahi-ward.
On the other day, I saw a big Koi (carp) swimming leisurely accompanied by other koi in the river. It was almost 50cm big. I also saw a school of mullet swimming nearby. Maybe because this river is close to sea, so it is brackish waters in which seawater and freshwater mix together. It is said that in the past, Koi, eel and Mokuso-crab were caught in the river.
