Description
Strolling through Nishi-ward: Hiranuma Memorial Gymnasium
Climbing up a slope from Sengenshita to Mitsuzawa, you will find a white building like a ※pagoda or control tower in a left corner enclosed by flowers. If you go down left, it’s Hodogaya-ward and right is Kanagawa-ward across one road. So it’s the junction of three wards.
This white building is actually Hiranuma Memorial Gymnasium. After the war, former mayor of Yokohama Ry?z? Hiranuma contributed to sports promotion for youth as well as reconstruction of the city. The gymnasium was named after him to honor his achievements. You can hear cheers of kids from the well-maintained facilities all day.
This leafy area has everything including soccer ground, baseball ground, tennis court and prefectural gymnasium and it is one of the few oasis for local people.
※Pagoda…Buddhist stupa which can be seen in Myanmar and other area.
Writing and picture by Tai Hasewaga (Nishi ward Cultural Association/Chairman of Kiko Society)
※This is a sketch and writing published in Yokohama Public Relation Nishi ward edition between November 1997 and April 2004. Please be noted that there’s a possibility that information in the article may be changed.
