Strolling through Nishi-ward: Nana-magari (hairpin turn) in Higashikubo-cho

Names of places of “Nana-magari” can be found all over Japan. It can be found in Yokohama too. Nana-magari in Yokohama is a very steep slope which starts from a road facing National Route 1 and connecting to Higashikubo-cho and Fujimigaoka Gakuen Secondary School.

If a road is zig-zag like sheep's gut, it is called “48 turns”. If a road is zig-zag like thin ivy and vines, it is called “99 turns” or hairpin turn. This area is west boarder of Nishi-ward. Nearby Sugiyama shrine belongs to Hodogaya-ward.

Now there are concrete staircase between houses. However, in my memory of a half century ago, it was a rough spot with few houses and the area was covered with weeds. The only same landscape is secondary school girls enjoying chatting on the hill.
