Strolling through Nishi-ward: Remnant of old Tokai-do Road
On the back of a park in Sengen-shit, there is a quiet path which is one road beyond Kanjo No-1, which is remnant of old Tokai-do Road. Sodegaura formed a bay around current Hodogaya station and Sugiyama shrine a little over a hundred years ago. Current Tokai-do Road was constructed after filling the land.
Old Tokai-do Road passes through Sengen shrine, Shinmeisha shrine, Matsubara shopping street and connects Hodogaya-juku. As cited in T?kaid?ch? Hizakurige written by Jippensha Ikku “once a barker of an inn catches a customer, he never let him go”, the place once flourished.
Many people had passed this road with various thoughts in the past, but now it’s very quiet, leaving no remnant of the old days.
