Description
Strolling through Nishi-ward: Road where frogs used to be croaking
Kubo-cho in the old days was said to be a main road connecting Hodogaya-juku and Noge/Kannai. However, an old document sites it as “a straight road in the middle of rice fields and it was noisy with frog croaking in summer”. In the early modern period, many female workers of cotton spinning company located in Kawabe-cho in Hodogaya passed through the road, making young local guy’s hearts flutter. It used to be a famous Hanamachi (district where geisha live and work). Now it is not what it used to be, but it still stands out among other shopping streets in terms of its energy and own atmosphere.
The area used to be flourished including Inari shrine, which Inari-dai was named after and Tenjin festivals. However, it looks like half a century history buried those memories.
