Strolling through Nishi-ward: Nostalgia of Slope

I saw a person carrying big Furoshiki (Japanese wrapping cloth) on his back on the slope connecting Kubocho to Fujimigaoka High School for Girls. I thought “oh I miss it”. Then suddenly I slipped back in time to a half century in my head.

Indeed, this place used to be a great play area for brats including me when I was a kid. Trees and grass were growing thickly, ivory was tangled and there used to be lots of insects, tadpoles and even snakes. Everyone was Tarzan here.

Among all, what attracted our mind the most was this store. There were mysterious creatures inside glass bottles on the display. You could see the eyes of live snakes tangled each other and sticking their black tongues out. Kids were sticking their foreheads on the glass display and their fear and longing of the unknown world were stirred.
