Description
Strolling through Nishi-ward: Past and Present of Hiranuma-cho
Hiranuma-cho was named after Kyubei Hiranuma, who was successful in landfilling the area finally after generations of effort and hardship. Nowadays, Hiranuma-cho seems to be quiet due to the development of west exit of Yokohama station and Minato Mirai 21 area, but in the past, Hiranuma station was built as an alternative of Yokohama station and was a flourishing town. However, after the station was closed, it became the past dream. Still, Hiranuma-cho was developed as commercial area and Nishi-Hiranuma-cho as industrial area.
Ujigami (local Shinto deity) of the town is Hiranuma shrine, or better known as Suitengu. A villager found charm of Suitengu drifted to channel of salt pan and he picked up and enshrined it and became popular year by year. This said to be an origin of the shrine. It enshrines Emperor Antoku, who drowned himself in Dannoura at the age of eight, which brings tears to my eyes.
