Description
Strolling through Nishi-ward: Shiri-kosuri-zaka (pratfall slope) on Suido-michi Road
This slope used to be called “shiri-kosuri-zaka (pratfall slope)” in the past. Suido-michi road connects Noge and Nishiya and you have to cross one of the steepest slopes in Yokohama on this road. It is so steep that people had to pull and control cars by falling down on their butt; that’s why it was called “pratfall slope”. It is indeed very steep that drivers get a little nervous even today.
This road is called “suido-michi (water road)” because water pipe was installed from confluence of Sagami River and Doushi River in 1887 (Meiji 20). It is mostly straight. After climbing down Mt. Noge, you have to go up and down twice. Then you will climb down another steep slope called Zinchu-zaka slope to get to Fujidana. It is said that the slope is named after former Prefectural Daiichi Junior High School (current Kibogaoka Senior High School in Asahi-ward).
