Description
Strolling through Nishi-ward: Fujidana in the old days
The name of this area “Fujidana” came from a beautiful wistaria-pergola nearby a tea-house called Suzuki-ya which used to be located at the entrance of current Fujidana shopping street. Their Sake Manju (Japanese Steamed Cake) was very famous and were sold until Showa 10s. It was little small but delicious.
It is said that this area was mostly fields until the end of Meiji period, but since Gumyoji temple’s Hanamachi (districts where Geisha live and work) was moved to Kubocho, the area was buzzing with energy. There used to be a rickshaw company near current 7th Yurindo bookstore and many rickshaw were running around carrying beautifully dressed geisha.
