Onko Chishin! Trek-trek Sketch in Nishi-ward: JOINUS no Mori Sculpture Park
If you go to the rooftop of the station building “JOINUS” at the west exit of Yokohama station, you will find the rooftop garden "JOINUS no Mori Sculpture Park". “JOINUS no Mori” was completed in 1978 and it became the " JOINUS no Mori Sculpture Park" five years later.
Covering an area of about 4,600 square meters, at the time, a rooftop garden was rare and was the largest one in Japan. Because of the rapid development of the west exit area, there were few places where people could take a rest easily. There used to be a 9-metre-high waterfall in the garden, and it seemed to be an oasis in the building district.
Today, the park is home to some 20,000 trees, including a 10-metre-high camphor tree. Six sculptures, including "Nike '83" by Kyoko Asakura and "Matsurika (Jasmine)" by Yasutake Funakoshi, can be admired here and there.
It is a relief to come to the rooftop garden from the crowded shopping area. The sound of birds singing "♪chirp chirp chirp" soothes the soul and gives you the feeling of a little forest bathing.
