Onko Chishin! Trek-trek Sketch in Nishi-ward: Former Takashima Pier
Cross the large Takashima pedestrian bridge near the Takashimacho intersection towards the Minatomirai area. Go along Suzukake Street, lined with new office buildings and modern high-rise flats.
Turn right at the intersection of Minatomirai 5-chome and you will soon see a convenience store. 30+ years ago, this area was a port facility and was the entrance to Takashima Pier 1. The landscape was completely different from today, with freight lines and warehouses.
The first pier was completed in 1930, after the Great Kanto Earthquake, and was followed by the third pier, which was used for domestic cargo, while passenger ferries of Tokai Kisen on the Oshima route used to leave from No.1 pier.
I enjoyed a ferry trip to Izu Oshima Island 51 years ago from this No.1 pier. A few years before that, Harumi Miyako had sung "Anko tsubaki wa koi no hana" (Camellia is a flower of love), which was a big hit, so I wanted to visit Izu Oshima Island. Nowadays there are ferries to Izu Oshima Island from Osanbashi Pier on Friday and Saturday nights.
