Onko Chishin! Trek-trek Sketch in Nishi-ward: Ganki Yokocho Street/Ganki Inari

At the halfway between Sakuragicho station and Takashima-cho on National Route 16, after Yukimibashi crossing, there is a diagonal road. When Minatomirai area was still Mitsubishi Dock, Ganki Yokocho Street was busy with its factory workers and it still has some remnants of good old days Yokohama.

When you go down the street, you can find a white flag on the left. That’s Ganki Inari. In 1873 (Meiji 6), “Gankirou”, which was one of popular brothel in Miyozaki-yukaku (red-light district) (located in current Yokohama Park) was transferred to Takashima-cho due to massive fire. It is said that there was a dormitory of prostitutes in this area and they worshiped this Inari. I imagine they prayed for their family in hometown, their health, their love and son on. “Ganki Inari” still has been carefully protected by local people.

Looking up from the street, beyond the old town, you can see high-rise buildings of new area “Minatomirai”. Passing through the street, you encounter old road “Yokohama Road”.
