Onko Chishin! Trek-trek Sketch in Nishi-ward: Owariya Bridge

Hamamatsu-cho crossing which is the intersection between National Route 1 and 16 always has heavy traffic.

In order to go to Kojukuji temple direction, you need to cross a rare S-shape Owariya Bridge, which is crossed over Tokaido Line, Yokosuka Line, Sotetsu Line and Katabira River. It is S-shape because there is railway track nearby the crossing.

It was a very difficult construction but completed in 1929 (Showa 4) after Great Kanto earthquake. It was named after “Owariya-shinden” where estuary was reclaimed in the middle of Edo period (Horei era).

A year after the completion of the bridge, Sengen-cho line of municipal railway was opened to traffic running on the bridge.

I remember peaceful scenery of Route 9 municipal railway running from Urafune-cho to Rokkakubashi slowly climbed up steep slope on the bridge.

On a sunny day, you can see Mt. Fuji from the bridge. I imagine passengers of the old municipal railway enjoyed big beautiful Mt. Fuji looking out the window.
