Onko Chishin! Trek-trek Sketch in Nishi-ward: Karuizawa Ancient Tomb Ruins
There actually is an ancient keyhole-shaped mound in Nishi-ward.
Walking on the right side of slope where cars are passing by from Sengen-shita crossing near Yokohama station west exit toward Mitsuzawa Park. When you pass a church, you will find a cliff. After climbing up the steep stairs on the right side, you will find a stela of “keyhole-shaped mound ruins” between trees. Looking at a photo of explanation board, it was actually located a bit ahead, at a driving school.
Its excavation started in 1965 (Showa 40) and it proved to be a construction of late 7th century.
There are both tunnel style stone chamber and vertical stone chamber inside it. It is a triple-stacked keyhole-shaped mound with 26.5 meters long and 2.9 meters high. Many items were discovered such as ancient earring, small crystal ball, Tetto (iron truncheon), glass bead, Sue pottery.
There remains kitchen midden of Jomon period in Nishi-ward. It means the area has been close to sea and a comfortable place to live since ancient time.
