Onko Chishin! Trek-trek Sketch in Nishi-ward: Yokohama Noh Theater

Climbing up Momijizaka slope near Sakuragicho station and turning right at Kanagawa Prefectural Music Hall, you will get to Kamon-yama Park and Yokohama Noh Theater is located at the corner.

A full-scale Noh stage was transferred to this place in 1996 (Heisei 8) from former Kaga Domain (Ishikawa prefecture) lord Maeda Nariyasu’s residence in Tokyo Negishi.

You can take a tour of the hall when there is no Noh and Kyogen performance. On the second floor, there is exhibition room displaying musical instruments such as ?tsuzumi (hourglass-shaped Japanese drum) and Japanese whistle and gorgeous Noh costume, Noh mask, Noh song book and so on.

You can watch Noh play from second floor audience seating (kensyo). It is such an excellent stage that you can feel the history of Japanese traditional performing arts. I remember watching Kyogen play for the first time when I was junior high school student at school hall. Now people can watch Noh and Kyogen at full-scale stage like this.

I got a permission and was sketching the Noh stage. Then I heard them singing and playing ?tsuzumi (hourglass-shaped Japanese drum) from backyard training room. It made me want to watch Noh and Kyogen at this place next time.
