Onko Chishin! Trek-trek Sketch in Nishi-ward: Red Gate Tofukuji Temple

When I was on a bus passing Kuboyama, I saw a temple with beautiful red gate in front of the side street near Hatsunecho bus stop. I went to the temple, which is Tofukuji Temple of Shingon Buddhism to sketch.

When you go through the Sanmon gate, you will find Enmado (a hall to enshrine Enma) with red door and main hall with Mitsuba-aoi (hollyhock) crest on glass door in wide precincts. It is said the temple was founded in 1243 (Kangen 1) in the middle of Kamakura period.

During Edo period, Ieyasu Tokugawa feoffed the land and temple. It was approved to use Tokugawa family crest and to build beautiful red gate in the temple. A town where the temple is located was named after the red gate of the temple.

It was burned down seven times since its foundation. The current temple building was reconstructed until 1961 (Showa 36). Nogeyama park is located behind the big cemetery of the temple.

I’m proud that such a historical temple exists in Nishi-ward.
