Onko Chishin! Trek-trek Sketch in Nishi-ward: Masonry retaining wall of Senzo Hiranuma’s old residence

On the opposite side of Yokohama City Central Library located on the corner of Nogezaka crossing, there is magnificent stone masonry piled up diagonally like stonewall of a castle.

There used to be a villa of raw silk merchant Senzo Hiranuma in this place. At the time, there were other villas of wealthy merchants including Zenzabur? Hara and Mogi S?b? in Noge area.

The stonewall is made from hexagon stones which is like turtle shell being piled up from right to left or up and down, which is called “turtleback style”.

The stonewall is obviously strong but well-organized and beautiful. This stonewall is approved as Yokohama city’s historical building.

After entering Meiji period, castle wall construction job disappeared. However, their craftmanship still can be found in the stonewall of wealthy merchants residence in Nishi-ward.
