Onko Chishin! Trek-trek Sketch in Nishi-ward: Hodogaya Road #3



Yokohama port was opened in late Edo period and “Yokohama road” was constructed in haste. Before that, many travelers took Hodogaya road from Hodogaya-juku to go to the port.

The road became shopping streets now. When you pass “Sun Mall Nishi Yokohama” in Kubocho, you will enter “Fujidana shopping street”. There are many shops selling daily necessities including liquor shop, fresh fish shop, greengrocery, butcher, general store and delicatessen. It still has nostalgic atmosphere of Showa era.

Keep walking for a while, you will get to busy Fujidanacho crossing. It intersects with Suido-michi street connecting to Nogeyama distributing reservoir. There is a police box in the corner. There is a wistaria-pergola which the town was named after. With two banks nearby, this crossing is center of this area. There used to be municipal railway stations here and it was very busy since that time. When you cross the intersection, you will find “Fujidana 1st avenue shopping street”. After the war, there used to be western movie theater here. It’s a very convenient town with shops including supermarket, processed fish paste shop, bookstore and clothing store where you can buy most of daily necessities. It is fun to imagine once travelers heading to the port had passed this road.
