Onko Chishin! Trek-trek Sketch in Nishi-ward: Hodogaya Road #1

Yokohama port was opened in 1859 (Ansei 6). At that time, in order to go to the port, people walked Yokohama road, which was constructed in haste from Sengenshit of Tokai-do road. Before Yokohama road was constructed, people took a ferry boat at in front of Suzaki shrine of Kanagawa-juku or they walked ancient road of Hodogaya road to go to the port.

Hodogaya road starts from Daimon-dori crossing, which is close to Shinmeisya shrine near Sotetsu Line Sonnocho station on former Tokai-do road. There is a painting of this place in “Tokaido Bunkennobe Ezu”, which I believe is one of the masterpiece painting books made by shogunate government during Edo period of Kansei era with the title of “Nomichi, Tobemura he Niji-cho”.

Turning left at Daimon-dori crossing with your back against Sonnocho station direction. Crossing an overpass of JR Tokaido Line and turning left in front of Sugiyama shrine. This is boarder of Nishi-ward. You will find an arch written “Green road Fujidana” on your right. Hodogaya road has five shopping streets. This is an entrance of “Kubocho nikoniko shopping street”.
