Onko Chishin! Trek-trek Sketch in Nishi-ward: Dockyard Garden

Next to Yokohama Landmark Tower near JR Sakuragicho station, there is an underground open space filled with terraced stones. It is former Yokohama Dock Co., Ltd Dock Number 2 (restored). Former Dock Number 1 is located next to Sail Training Ship Nipponmaru.

After opening of Yokohama port, the need to construct and repair ships came up. In 1896 (Meiji 29), construction of this former Dock Number 2 was completed before Dock Number 1. Since then, many ships were constructed and repaired here, but it finished its role as dock in 1973 (Showa 48).

Going down to the underground open space, where used to be a dock, you can enjoy every piece of dark gray sone and you can feel history in it. You can see barnacles on some of the stones because this place used to be filled with seawater.

I grew up in Nishi-ward and I wish I could have opportunity to see the dockyard of the time. I wanted to see spectacular ceremonial ship launching then. Now this place is used as even space.
