Onko Chishin! Trek-trek Sketch in Nishi-ward: Remains of Second Yokohama Station
On the side of elevated railroad of JR Keihintohoku Line at Takashimacho crossing, a red brick color apartment building is located and there used to be second of Yokohama station here.
The first Yokohama station was located in the place where current Sakuragicho station is located, but it was moved to this place in 1915 (Taisho 4). The station building was two-stories with a tower and made of red bricks.
Looking at photos of the time, the station building was stately with many bicycles parked in front of it. However, the building was burned down due to Kanto Great Earthquake and only external wall was left. Unfortunately, the building had a short life of eight years.
Now, remains of red bricks which were dug out are displayed. They are red-bricks of foundation base of baggage claim area of the station. There also is remains of seawater inlet spot of Yokohama electronic power company’s Takashima power plant.
This place is not easily found from road side, but I would like more people to find out this place because it used to be a main gateway to Yokohama even for a short period of time.
