Onko Chishin! Trek-trek Sketch in Nishi-ward: Takashima-cho Crossing
There used to be municipal railway called “Ding-ding train” and loved by people in Nishi-ward. It started operation in 1904 (Maiji period) and until Showa period, it was main transportation for local people and I used to use it whenever I go out.
There were eight different municipal railway lines running at Takashima-cho crossing near Yokohama station. One going to Rokkakubashi Bridge and Namanugi through Yokohama station. Another going to Makado and Yahata-bashi Bridge through Sakuragicho station. Another going to Idogaya and Gumyoji-temple direction through Hodogaya station. Another going to Fujidana, Kuboyama, Band?bashi, Urafunecho and Takigashira through Hamamatsucho.
Since there were many municipal railways were passing in the corner of Takashima-cho crossing, there used to be a “signal tower” to switch signals and rail tracks. As a little kid, staff working at this signal tower looked very cool and I admired them. Now this crossing is even busier with buses, trucks, cars are passing by and express way and Keihin-T?hoku Line are on viaduct and Yokohama Municipal Subway is running underground.
