Onko Chishin! Trek-trek Sketch in Nishi-ward: MOVIL



Shortly after the war, there used to be double feature movie theaters such as “Hamafuji-kan” and “Fujidana Central Theater” around Fujidana area in Nishi-ward. I used to enjoy watching western movies starring John Wayne. It was a time when not much entertainment was available, so those theaters were very popular. There used to be a service called “Imahan” and you can watch a movie with half price.

In 1956 (Showa 31), Yokohama Meihin Street was opened in west exit and first-run theater was opened. Later in 1971 (Showa 46), “Sotetsu Movil”, which has 5 screens was opened in Yokohama Bay Sheraton Hotel & Towers. Those who went to Isezakicho area to watch first-run movies also started going to “Sotetsu Movil” in Yokohama station west exit after its opening.

Later, “Sotetsu Movil” was relocated to a place after going through West Exit 5th Avenue and passing blue Kobashi Bridge. Its name has also changed to “MOVIL” but it’s been attracting movie fans even now.
