Onko Chishin! Trek-trek Sketch in Nishi-ward: Noge no Kirikaeshi (Noge Cutting)

In 1859 (Ansei 6), Yokohama Road was built in haste in Yokohama. On former Tokai-do Road, you pass Shibu town (current Sengencho), Aratama Bridge, Hiranuma Bridge and Isizaki Bridge (current Shikijima Bridge) and then going up a hill of Tobe, you will get to Noge no Kirikaeshe (Noge Cutting) which was made by cutting a mountain. When Yokohama Port was opened, this area was located at higher place than now and the road was very narrow.

Travelers who aimed for Yokohama from all over nation passed the Noge Cutting. I imagine they had big dreams of succussing in their businesses and interacting with foreigners.

Going through the cutting and turning left, you will reach a place with very open-view in front of you. People back then might be able to see Kannai, buildings at port and Black Ships from here. I imagine this view made their dream even bigger and they climbed down the Nogezaka slope.

In 1928 (Showa 3) when municipal railway opened its operation from Nishi-hiranuma Bridge to Chojamachi 5-chome, the road was dug down and became wider becoming the current style.
