Onko Chishin! Trek-trek Sketch in Nishi-ward: West Exit 5th Avenue
Going out from S.West exit of Sotetsu Line Yokohama station and turning left, you will find West Exit 5th Avenue which always has been very busy.
The area of current Yokohama Station West exit used to be inlet called “Sodegaura” during Edo Period. Later the area was developed as a new field, and before long, it was landfilled. After Second World War in 1955 (Showa 30s), West Exit Meihin Street and Takashimaya were opened and in 1961 (Showa 36), West Exit 5th Avenue was opened. At that time, people started to use trains not only Yokohama municipal railways, bringing more young people to West exit and made it downtown.
There has been many cafes in West Exit 5th Avenue including classic music caf? “Denen”, brick-built caf? “Kojo”, “La mer”, “Rose Garden” and “Yokohama Coffee Shop”, which is still in business. There used to be “Cattleya”, “Shirakaba”, “Hakucho” and so on around the area. This street is filled with lots of memories of my youth.
