Onko Chishin! Trek-trek Sketch in Nishi-ward: Aratama Bridge
Heading to Shin-yokohama street from Sengenshita crossing, you will find Aratama Bridge which was completed in 1927 (Showa 2). The bridge is stately with both sides are arch-shaped. It’s one of historical bridges in Yokohama. In 1859 (Ansei 6) when Yokohama Port was opened, “Yokohama Road” was built in haste. Yokohama Road connect Shiboumura (current Sengencho) on former Tokai-do Road through Tobe, Noge-cutting to Kannnai. As part of the construction, Aratama Brdige was also built. It was made by Japanese cedar and pine trees, with the length of around 18 meters and width of around 6 meters. It’s difficult to imagine since there are lots of tall buildings around the area now, but back them, right side of the bridge was Okano-shinden and left side was inlet. Many people across Japan visited Yokohama to see Black Ships, foreigners and Ijinkan (foreign residence) including those who tried their fortunes in Yokohama where civilization and enlightenment started. I believe they crossed this bridge with big dreams in their heart. I wonder if they saw Black Ships on the port from here.
