Onko Chishin! Trek-trek Sketch in Nishi-ward: Fujidana
Getting off at Sotetsu Line Nishi-Yokohama Station and heading to southeast direction, you will reach Fujidanacho crossing. There used to be a municipal railway station here and it was filled with passengers getting on and off.
There are five local shopping streets with downtown atmosphere. You can hear salespeople’s vibrantly saying like “Check our great deals!”. The road where those local shopping streets are on is called Hodogaya Road. It has been used as a road leading to Tobe from Hodogaya-juku (station) since Edo period. In early Meiji Period, there was a Sake Manju (Japanese Steamed Cake) store at the corner of the crossing and there was a wisteria pergola in front of the store. At the end of every April, the wisteria bloomed and entertained passersby. In 1928 (Showa 3), this area was named “Fujidana (wisteria pergola in Japanese)” after the wisteria pergola. The restored wisteria pergola is blooming beautifully this year too.
