Onko Chishin! Trek-trek Sketch in Nishi-ward: Sengen Jinja Shrine

Sengen Jinja shrine is located near Sengenshit crossing. It is said it was built to enshrine a divine spirit of Fuji Sengen Shrine in 1080 (J?ryaku 4). The main shrine is two-stories Sengen-zukuri style built in Showa era. In Edo period, ancient tunnel tombs on cliff were called “Fuji’s cave” and were popular.

The road in front of the shrine is old Tokai-do Road which was structured by tenma system ordered by Ieyasu Tokugawa in 1601 (Keich? 6) and it was connected to Edo and Kyoto. Many people including daimyo's retinue and Yaji and Kita came and went the road. It’s been an arterial road long before the opening of Yokohama port. The shrine is still loved by local people and visited by modern-day Yaji and Kita as part of tour visiting Kaidos (roads).
