Description

In Meiji 4 (1871), Kaemon Takashima contracted the French engineer Pelegrin to begin building a gas factory at the site of former Ise Yamashita coal warehouse (the current site of Honcho Elementary School). The first gas lamp in Japan was lit on September 29, Meiji 5 (1872).
At the former site of the gas factory within the premises of Honcho Elementary School stands a single gas lamp and a monument.
