Description

In Ansei 6 (1859), a magistrate’s office was established on the hill north of Mount Noge upon the selection of Yokohama Village as the location of a treaty port that ended Japan’s isolation from foreign countries.
Mount Noge was forming a cliff nearing the sea, and far away from the center of the treaty port. It was selected as the location of the magistrate’s office because the domestic politics could be kept secret from the foreigners and Tobe was a natural stronghold that could become a fortress.
