Description

A rare event occurred on December 9, Meiji 7 (1874), during which the planed Venus passed directly between the Sun and the Earth. Because Japan was the optimal location for observing this incident, large observation teams were deployed in cities such as Yokohama, Kobe and Nagasaki. A Mexican team led by F. D. Covarrubias set up an observatory in Miyazaki-cho.
This monument was erected to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the observation.
