Description

In the Ansei period during which Yokohama opened its port, there was a dormitory for a Yukaku brothel called Gankirou near the current Yokohama Park. This street took its name and came to be known as Ganki Yokocho. Ganki Inari, cherished by the locals, is enshrined nearby, and a ceremonial festival is held every May. Gankirou was the inspiration for staging of the play “Furu America ni Sode wa Nurasaji” (Sleeves Aren’t Wet in Raining America) by the writer Sawako Ariyoshi, and the waka poem used for the title of the play is put up within the premises of Ganki Inari Shrine.
