Description
Ever since the opening of the port, Yokohama had struggled with water shortage. In Meiji 20 (1887), the first modern waterworks in Japan was established, and the first water plant was build here. Even though the water plant was later destroyed by the Great Kanto Earthquake, the construction of a circular water distribution reservoir at the site (pictured right) built with steel concrete was completed in March of Showa 2 (1927), and it was used until March of Heisei 13 (2001). Currently, a 40,000-ton reservoir built in Showa 42 (1967) is in use.
